Performance-Based Grant: A New Avenue for Local Government Funding in Cameroon

The Performance-Based Grant is a new initiative announced by Cameroon’s Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, George Elanga Obam, aimed at supporting decentralized local governments. This initiative is part of the Local Governance and Resilient Communities Project (Prolog), which is supported by the World Bank.

28.3 billion CFAF to support local municipalities 🌍

The grant totals 28.3 billion CFAF, which will be allocated to 187 municipalities across six regions: Far North, South West, East, Adamawa, North West, and the North region. These municipalities will have access to funding that allows them to improve their local infrastructures and increase resilience, especially in areas affected by climate-related challenges.

A focus on climate resilience and infrastructure development

According to Minister Obam, the Performance-Based Grant is designed to strengthen the infrastructures of communities impacted by climate change. This funding mechanism promotes improved governance, efficient use of resources, and accountability, ensuring that the grant money is effectively spent on enhancing local development and supporting vulnerable communities.

The Prolog project, under which the grant falls, is aimed at building resilient communities capable of withstanding environmental challenges while fostering sustainable development at the grassroots level.
