World Bank Grants Additional 30 Billion FCFA for Babadjou-Bamenda Road Project
The World Bank has approved an additional 30 billion FCFA in funding to complete the rehabilitation of the Babadjou-Bamenda road, a vital link in the 438 km Yaoundé-Bamenda-Enugu corridor.
Initiated in 2017, the project faced numerous delays, primarily due to separatist unrest in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions. This fresh injection of funds aims to finalize key urban sections in Bamenda, including Amour Mezam Junction, Finance Junction, and Veterinary Junction, spanning a total of 6.538 km.
“This additional financing ensures that the crucial link of the Babadjou-Bamenda road axis will commence by the end of 2024,” stated the minister. The improved road is expected to enhance trade between Cameroon and Nigeria, bolstering economic activities between the two nations. With this new funding, the total financial support from the World Bank for this project amounts to over 145 billion FCFA (242 million USD). This investment is significant for the Babadjou-Bamenda route in connecting the West and North-West regions and fostering regional development despite the ongoing challenges.
